Recycling at it's Finest

I called the recycling center to ask for a can rather than the little green bins they give you. Our family of five generates a lot of recycling material. It all won't fit in two green bins.  Apparently in this county they don't have cans. So I asked the lady what do I do with all the other recycling that won't fit. Her response: Just throw it away!

Do you recycle? What are your thoughts on her comment?

What an attitude!! Our recycling only gets collected every two weeks so we find it hard to fit everything in. They need to make it easier for people trying to care for the planet.

Wow! How short-sighted of the county. In our local council area (I guess equivalent to a county - our state is divided up into local councils), we get a big wheelie bin for recycling, as big as our regular bin, though the recycling gets picked up every 2 weeks instead of every week. On the alternate weeks they pick up our green waste (garden cuttings, prunings, weeds, etc).

I suppose that you could try to increase your re-using, if you don't already, rather than actual recycling. My daughter's school is always looking for cereal boxes and other cardboard boxes for craft, for example.

Oh, and this might be a good thing to write a letter/make an official complaint about, especially if you know any other like-minded people in the county. Perhaps you can make them get cans!

Seriously? That's awful!!! I would be calling to complain...to someone. She had to have only been an office manager or something, ask to speak to HER manager!

Also..changed my google talk thing to Mamaritaville. I tried inviting you, don't think it went through!

That's ridiculous! I agree -- call and ask to talk to her manager. If nothing happens, you might consider a letter to the editor outlining your phone call.

There's no such thing as recycling "officially" here, but I grew up in a house where the three Rs were taught -- before it was fashionable. We reuse what we can, gift what we're done with and only throw away what no longer has any use for anyone and is biodegradeable.

Maybe your county's policy is the way it is because no one has bothered to question it?

I love these containers from Amazon. Check it out on my blog:

Seriously! We get one of those large lidded bins with wheels for recycling, another for trash, and a slightly smaller one for green waste, and it gets picked up once a week. We occasionally have to hold some of the recycling for the next week, or make a box run to the cardboard recycling place, but that's it. (Yard waste is another matter - we're always running out of room on that...here in S CA stuff grows all year round!) Our city does have a policy though that you can get another of any of these bins, but you'll pay a bit more for pickup each week.

Sounds like you've got some complaining to do (yeah, I know, in all that free time you have!)

What?!?! Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of recycling? LOL

We recycle but can only take our cans and paper, which really sucks because I would like to recycle the plastic we use. I try to find projects to do with the kids at school with them. We just don't have the resources like we did in CA.
