Craft Project Thursday

Postage Stamp Pins

The stamps that once moved the mail can now move your heart. Simply laminate stamps to show your spirit. Stamp pins make proud accessories. And they are so easy to make!!!

What You Need:
New or canceled postage stamps
Straight scissors
Decorative edge scissors
Strong adhesive, such as E6000
Pin backs

Instructions:

1. Before beginning, refer to a postage stamp collector's book to make sure the stamps are not rare or valuable.

2. If the stamps have been used, carefully remove any paper backing. To remove, tear or cut off the upper right-hand corner of the envelope. Soak it, stamp side down, in warm water. Once the stamp falls away from the paper, let it soak for a few minutes more to remove any remaining glue. Pick up the stamp with tongs and dry it between paper towels. Place it under a heavy book for several hours. If the stamp will not peel away from the backing, trim around the stamp using decorative-edge scissors.

3. Take stamps to a photocopy shop and have them laminated. You can fit several on one sheet, leaving approximately 1 inch between stamps for trimming.

4. Cut the stamps apart if several are on one laminating sheet. Trim around each stamp using decorative edge scissors.

5. Glue a pin back to the back of the laminated stamp near the top. Let dry.

Diane Birch – Music with Soul

dianebirch

Although Diane was born in Michigan, her childhood was spent on the move as the daughter of a preacher, living between Zimbabwe, South Africa and Australia, before her parents finally settled in Portland, Oregon.  When she was in her early teens, Diane absorbed a unique and cosmopolitan perspective on life that shines through her music and makes a simple categorization of it impossible.

Diane Birch sounds like an old favorite, with all the sparkle and magic of a breakthrough talent. People say she sounds like a combination of early Carol Kin, Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks, with a little Joss Stone and Cat Power mixed in. Bible Belt is only her first record, but it’s one of the most accomplished albums you’ll hear all year. From the opening track “Fire Escape” to the closing “Magic View,” Diane’s stunning voice is mesmerizing.

I didn’t know what to think of her at first when I read she had in a “Goth” phase. But when I listened to her CD, her music relaxed me. I love it. I now listen to it when I sew. It has soul and I can tell the music and words came from her heart.

You see that widget on the left hand sidebar? For every person who buys a CD from that widget, $1.00 is donated to Autism Speaks.Since its inception, Autism Speaks has committed an unprecedented $128 million in new research funding through 2014 to uncover the cause(s), prevention, treatments and cure for autism, making it the nation's top private funder of autism research.  And this charity is very near to my heart as my son has autism.

Listen for yourself to the music with soul!

What’s Going on in Your Town?

Summer is a time to spend with family and friends. If your like my
family you are probably looking for things for your family to do
together this summer. Whether it be free or not.

Event Setter is an awesome resource where you can find events going on in
selected cities around the world. Just click on the city of your choice. Let’s look at the Events Calendar for San Diego.  To find out about events in San Diego for instance just click on the city and you will get a list of categories in case you want to find something specific.  Now if you want to know about all the upcoming San Diego events , click on “All San Diego Events” and you will get the entire list of events for that city.  How easy is that?

I have used Event Setter to find fun events to go to while my kids are
home from school. It keeps them occupied and gives them a break from
the mundane.

Go check it out!!!

Help Raise Money for Ovarian Cancer Research

Lemonade stands practically epitomize summer. Do you remember, when you were younger, setting up a makeshift stand at the end of the driveway and selling lemonade to friends and family?  And, of course, much more recently, I can recall afternoons spent squeezing lemons, scooping sugar, chilling big pitchers of lemonade in our fridge, and helping my own three kids set up a stand to sell cold drinks and cookies to our neighbors and other passersby. (Of course, by then, prices had gone up rather dramatically!)

Just in time for the warm weather, Electrolux and Kelly Ripa are kicking off their Virtual Lemonade Stand campaign to drive awareness and raise funds for Ovarian Cancer Research. Starting this month, you can visit Electrolux to design and open your own virtual lemonade stand and even pick the flavors of lemonade you want to feature at your stand, from Sparkling Ginger to Rosemary Watermelon.

For every stand opened, Electrolux will donate $1 to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF). In addition, you can help the cause even more by buying and sending virtual glasses of lemonade to your friends and family, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting OCRF. This is a great way to celebrate the beginning of summer, let friends know you're thinking of them, and support a great cause.  Even better, just for opening your stand, and then again every day that you log in and visit your stand, you will be entered to win a new French Door Refrigerator from Electrolux - perfect for storing your own pitchers of lemonade. When others donate to your stand, they will also have a chance to win.

The new French Door Refrigerator by Electrolux has some cool new features that make it a great refrigerator for entertaining.  There is the Perfect Temp Drawer™, which provides storage for any number of items that you want to keep at the ideal temperature. It's also a large enough refrigerator to store everything from party platters to juice boxes.

Be sure to check out Electrolux for a chance to win the new Electrolux French Door Refrigerator.
